The Nine Strategic Windows Model

The "nine strategic windows" model uses industry globalism and the firm's preparedness as criteria for deciding if the firm should go abroad, internationally or rather to stay at home.

Industry Globalism
International marketing environment determines the degree of globalism. Thus, the strategic actions and behaviour of firms depend on the structure of international competition in the related industry.

Preparedness for Internationalization
Firms have the power to influence this dimension. It determines the preparedness of firms to expand their skills to international boundaries. These skills include personal skills and managerial skills. Furthermore, a well-prepared company for internationalization has the capability of dominating the international market. On the other hand, a weak firm, according to Solberg (1997), should stay at the home market and improve its performance.

SMART objectives!

Meeting marketing objectives should lead to sales. If not, you need to set different marketing objectives in order to have the desired result. In addition, they should be clear, measurable, and have a stated time frame for achievement.

In other words, the objectives should be SMART
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely

Based on the source below, you can understand that we need to bear in mind this approach in order to accomplish our goals, targets and objectives.

What are the characteristics of successful international brand names?

When a new product is developed, a distinctive brand name should be chosen to differentiate it from similar competitive products. Some characteristics should be present in order for an international brand name to be successful.

Not only should it catch the customers’ attention but it must also be memorable. The brand name should be simple. For example, Coca-Cola has four syllables but we notice how smoothly it rolls on the tongue.

The connection to the product’s positioning in the potential consumers’ perceptual map is an essential characteristic. For example when the brand name of a product is the word “One” then this reflects its position in its category. In order for Brand names to be successful, they should communicate to the consumer the use of the product. For instance, the brand name “Wash & Go” shows its relation to fast and effective cleaning.

Moreover, successful brand names should develop a nickname for example “Coke” for “Coca-Cola”, “Bud” for “Budweiser Beer”. It is worth mentioning that, short and easily-pronounced brand names help the customer remember them comparing.

Uniqueness is another important characteristic that brand names should have. Brand names do not need to be weird; having a novel and exceptional however will distinguish it from other similar products. Finally linking a visual image to the brand name helps the consumer remember it better.

Language: A virtue and A barrier

To begin with, language is one of the fundamental elements of culture and sometimes it can become a barrier to effective communication. Hence, we need to take into consideration this crucial element in order to avoid translation errors. An ad campaign, a product or a brand image either locally or globally can be devastated because of the translation errors. Moreover, if you have the ability to speak the language well, does not eliminate the need for translators.  It is worth mentioning that no method is foolproof for avoiding translation errors but a double translation is the safest way. Specifically, use two translations, first by bilingual native and second, by a bilingual foreigner in order to compare and have the proper result.

Below there are some examples of translation errors:

In Bangkok dry cleaner’s boast
“Men, Drop your trousers here for best results”

In a Japanese hotel
You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid”

In a Copenhagen airline ticket office
“We take your bags and send them in all directions”

American deodorant manufacturer’s international theme “If you use our deodorant, you won’t be embarrassed in public.”

Sent Spanish translation in Mexico

- Translator used word embarazada, in Mexican (Spanish=pregnant)

The name Coca-Cola in China was first rendered as
Ke-ke-ken-la.
Thousands of signs later found out that the phrase means "bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 Chinese characters and found a close phonetic equivalent, "ko-kou-ko-le," which can be loosely translated as "happiness in the mouth."

Nivea: StressTest Commercial

Nivea as a global skin and body care brand chose to corporate with an agency ad, Felix & Lamberti in order to promote their product, a deodorant. They ambushed a series of people in an airport waiting room with a mischievous multimedia barrage.

Through this "evil" multimedia made it appear as though each one was wanted by the police for some crime and that that person wanted by the authorities. Naturally, the victim's confusion, anxiety and stress grow with each passing moment. As you watch the commercial, you can sense the tension through the facial expressions of unsuspecting StreesTest victims. According to AdWeek, Nivea stated that the video’s participants were thoroughly studied in advance (with the assistance of close friends) to ensure their physical and mental eligibility for this type of situation. Hence, this means that those in the video are not actors, but everyday people.

It is worth mentioning that marketing strategies are the fundamental goals of increasing sales and achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. In this case, the ambush marketing will assist Nivea to have more effective results in terms of promoting, selling its product by the assistance of the agency ad, Felix & Lamberti.

How would you feel if that happened to you?

The power of Co-branding!

To begin with, a marketing manager needs to decide which approach is the best in order to develop a powerful global brand name of his/her campaign.

Co-branding is a form of cooperation between at least two or more brands of goods or services. Through this form, the participants can create synergies which are valuable for both. Mostly, in case of co-branding, the products are complementary in the way that one product can be consumed or used independently of the other product or service.

Below there are some examples of co-branding:
